Whose Country you’re on
Bundjalung (Arakwal) Country (Bun-ja-lung, Ar-ak-wal)
- Cavanbah, meeting place is Byron Bay (Cav-an-bah)
- Walgun is Cape Byron (Wal-gun)
Elders: Local Elders and the Land Council are the authority on Country; we point you to them rather than naming anyone.
The Arakwal Bumberlin people of the Bundjalung Nation have lived around Byron Bay for at least 22,000 years. Arakwal Country runs from Seven Mile Beach south of Broken Head to the Brunswick River, out to the escarpment and east into the sea. Cavanbah was the meeting place where the northern and southern Bundjalung came together, and Cape Byron, Walgun, has always been a special place. Cook and Banks saw campfires along these beaches in 1770.
Cedar getters arrived by 1869, gold miners worked the beaches from 1870 and Cavanbah was renamed Byron Bay in 1894. In late 1994 three Arakwal Elders, sisters, lodged a native title claim; the Corporation was registered in 1996, one of Australia's first Indigenous Land Use Agreements, in 2001, created Arakwal National Park, jointly managed with National Parks, two more agreements followed in 2008, and in 2019 the Federal Court recognised Arakwal native title over Cape Byron and surrounding waters, only the second sea-rights recognition in NSW.
